PlayStation 3: Software Update 2.70

From/De: Sony Computer Entertainment America

Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) today announced details of the next system software update (v. 2.70) for PLAYSTATION®3 (PS3™) system, which includes several new features that enhance how PS3 users communicate and interact with their online friends. The system software update 2.70 will be available soon and delivers a new Text Chat feature that will enable users to chat with their online PlayStation®Network friends. Other updates include enhancements to the Friends list on the XMB™ (XrossMediaBar) and improvements to the video delivery service on PlayStation®Store.

Through the new Text Chat feature, PS3 owners can chat with their friends using the Wireless Keypad, on-screen keyboard, or compatible keyboard peripherals. Users can participate in up to three persistent chat rooms at once, and each room can host up to 16 users. Text Chat can be accessed while playing PS3 games.

In addition to Text Chat, firmware 2.70 provides enhancements to Friends lists, allowing users to sort their friends by online status. Online friends will still be sorted in alphabetical order, while offline friends will be sorted by when they were last online, with the most recent being first. PS3 owners will also be able to attach larger files to messages sent to their friends – the file size limit will increase from 1MB to 3MB.

The system software update 2.70 will also make improvements to the video delivery service on PlayStation Store. Video files purchased from PlayStation Store can be backed up to an external storage device and then restored to PS3 system’s internal hard drive for playback. Additionally, videos purchased for PSP®(PlayStation®Portable) system can now be transferred to PS3 system for playback.

PLAYSTATION®3 EXCLUSIVE inFAMOUS ELECTRIFIES WITH INNOVATIVE, HYBRID MUSICAL SCORE

World-Renowned Musicians Amon Tobin, James Dooley, Mel Wesson and Martin Tillman Come Together to Create the Imaginative Score Heard in the Highly-Anticipated Open-World Superhero Adventure

FOSTER CITY, Calif., April 1, 2009 – Sony Computer Entertainment America announced today that inFAMOUS, the highly-anticipated, modern day superhero adventure exclusively for the PLAYSTATION® (PS3™) computer entertainment system, will feature an innovative musical score created by popular underground electronic musician Amon Tobin, world-renowned composers James Dooley and Mel Wesson and electric cellist Martin Tillman. Developed by Sucker Punch, creators of the critically-acclaimed Sly Cooper® series, inFAMOUS launches in June, immersing players in the troubled world of Cole McGrath, a regular guy turned superhero who survives a massive blast within Empire City and learns to master his newfound powers.

Varying from dark intensity to haunting melancholy, collaborative efforts for the score were led by SCEA Music Manager Jonathan Mayer, veteran of the God of War® II and Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune™ soundtracks. To encapsulate the gritty and decimated nature of Empire City, Mayer and the contributing musicians threw out all conventional standards of traditional music production, turning instead to real-life objects and materials found in urban environments. Objects such as trashcan lids, water jugs and broken glass were combined with traditional music instruments played in non-traditional ways — bungie cords were stretched across a concert bass drum and strummed, wire brushes were beat on a suspended tuba and shakers were constructed of broken glass. Recorded and produced at SCEA’s newly built Foster City recording studio, the end result is a hybrid electronica orchestral score that enhances the chaotic and menacing nature of the city.
