Many people who love watching movies and playing games in the communist country of Cuba are now upset due to stricter rules by the authorities.

The Cuban government has ordered the shutdown of premises and private homes where people had been watching 3D movies and playing videogames, stating the”3D” rooms have never been authorized and should be closed down immediately.

Many businesses that are licensed to offer food and refreshments have been letting people watch movies and play videogames in small, separate rooms in the last few years.

Business owners are now unhappy because they won’t be able to recover the money they’ve spent in their equipment. Fans of games and movies will now have less options to have fun. Only state-run cinemas in poor shape is their only choice.

According to a message published on the newspaper Granma by the Executive Committee of the Council of Ministers, “cinematic exhibition (including 3D rooms) and computer games will cease immediately in whatever kind of private business activity.”

An article on the government-run newspaper Juventud Rebelde stated the movie and gaming rooms are the cause of “frivolity, mediocrity, pseudo culture and banality.”

Star Trek, Final Fantasy VII & Batman: The Animated Series: Anniversaries!!!

[EN]: There are three franchises this week celebrating their anniversaries once again. In their own right, they say hurray because  they know they have made us truly happy throughout the years.

Star Trek: Today ST celebrates its 46 anniversary. Though 46 is not as special as 45 or 50 or other numbers, it does show how relevant the series has been since it was first brought to TV. For many people, their favorite ST movie still is the one with Ricardo Montalbán in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. That movie has lots of action scenes. It was also Montalbán’s best movie ever, according to critics.

If you stop by Google.com today, you will see the original cast of Star Trek, including, Kirk, Spock, Uhura, Chekov, and others. Don’t just see it, click on it. And try to find the tribbles.

Batman: The Animated Series: Its 20th anniversary was two days ago, yet for many people young and old, this is perhaps the best animated version of the Dark Knight thus far, and also one of the best American-made animated series ever. It currently airs on The Hub. The entire franchise has been successful, not just in films but also in movies and videogames, though it has been absent as a TV series since the late 1960s.

Final Fantasy VII: Perhaps the best Final Fantasy game. It arrived to the US exactly 15 years ago today. It was the first FF to arrive to a platform other than the Nintendo ones. Because the CD stored much more data than N64 cartridges, it was an obvious choice for SquareSoft (the former name of Square Enix) to make that transition. The game was fantastic and it’s the one many fans would like to see a remake of. It was recently released on PCs and it includes achievements. Though I can’t make up my mind as to which FF is the best one yet (either FF7 or FF6), FF7 on the PlayStation let us explore cool worlds , with great narrative and awesome characters.

From Netflix, Qwikster is born: Netflix to offer TV shows and movies via online only, and Qwikster by mail

From Netflix, Qwikster is born: Netflix to offer TV and movies via online only, and Qwikster by mail

[By: Alberto C. Saldamando]

After the recent loss of a million customers due to the increase in the cost of its services, Netflix has just posted an unexpected announcement for many.

Via the company’s blog, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings surprised everyone in a big way: the separation in the ways ways Netflix offers movies and TV shows.

In a few weeks, Netflix will only offer movies over the Internet, while the new sister company Qwikster will be in charge of mailing movies and other programs on DVD that customers want to see. In addition, Qwikster will be Blockbuster and GameFly’s newest competitor in the business of renting video games by mail.

For many people, perhaps this radical change gets to disappoint them, but Hastings explained in detail why:

So we realized that streaming and DVD by mail are becoming two quite different businesses, with very different cost structures, different benefits that need to be marketed differently, and we need to let each grow and operate independently. It’s hard for me to write this after over 10 years of mailing DVDs with pride, but we think it is necessary and best: In a few weeks, we will rename our DVD by mail service to “Qwikster”.

There is still no starting date for Qwikster, but the web site is already available with an image saying the service will be launched

A new competitor in the digital battle of video-on-demand services

English | En español: [http://blogs.impre.com/piensa-digital/2010/12/28/un-nuevo-competidor-en-la-batalla-digital-de-videos-bajo-demanda/].

With the support of Sonic Solutions, Sears has begun distributing movies and TV shows over the Internet and has become the newest competitor of video-on-demand (VOD) digital services. Known as Alphaline Entertainment [http://alphaline.roxionow.com/], it currently allows comsumers to download new films the same day as the DVD and Blu-ray discs get to be on sale.

The deal between Sonic and Sears is part of a multi-year agreement in order to offer this service in as many devices as possible.

“Collaborating with Sonic provides a great opportunity for Sears and Kmart to launch digital services for customers seeking even faster access to the latest in home entertainment experiences,” stated Karen Austin, President of Consumer Electronics for Sears.

Currently, the service works with Windows PCs (XP/Vista/7), RoxioNow-ready Blu-Ray players and Xbox 360 game consoles. Movies for rent cost $3.99, while recent movies cost $19.99. The price of older films varies.

It will be a long fight for Sears. Netflix has a great advantage for being the champion, however, Sears can still win. For now, Netflix and Redbox customers have to wait 28 days before they could get films that belong to certain Hollywood motion picture company. The same won’t happen with Sears.

For those people who can’t wait to watch a film as soon as it’s available on sale for home viewing, Sears’ plan is a good alternative, though you may have to pay a bit more for the inmediate rent of a movie, and some time for its download.

From/De: SCEA

Sony Computer Entertainment America, LLC (SCEA) today announced that streaming from Netflix will be available on the PlayStation®3 (PS3™) system as a native application in the United States on October 18, 2010. Instantly watching movies and TV episodes streamed from Netflix on the PS3 system previously required an instant streaming disc, and now PS3 system owners will have the added convenience of enjoying videos streamed from Netflix directly from the XMB™ (XrossMediaBar) menu. Additionally, the PS3 system will be the first consumer electronics device to support 5.1-channel surround sound on movies and TV shows streamed from Netflix, as announced by Netflix and Dolby Laboratories, Inc. today.

Several new enhancements are coming to the Netflix experience on the PS3 system that will make watching your favorite movies and TV shows better than ever. PS3 system owners with Netflix memberships will receive all of the new features at no additional cost to their Netflix monthly subscription.

  • Movies and TV shows from Netflix will be accessible from PS3’s XMB menu under a new Netflix icon under the Video category. To access Netflix, PS3 owners will need to sign-in with their PlayStation®Network account.
  • Support for Dolby Digital Plus 5.1-channel surround sound will enable users to experience premium-quality audio.
  • A new user interface, including the recently added search functionality, will deliver a much richer and faster browsing experience, making it easier to find the specific titles you’re looking for or to discover new content.
  • Some movies and TV shows will be viewable in 1080i resolution, offering an enhanced visual experience as more consumers adopt HDTVs.
  • The amount of time to start playback will be improved.
  • An increasing number of movies and TV shows will be viewable with subtitles or alternate audio tracks.

“With a new look and feel plus additional features such as 5.1 surround sound, Netflix on the PlayStation 3 delivers an amazing viewing experience for enjoying movies and TV shows streamed from the Internet to your living room,” said Greg Peters, Netflix vice president, product development. “We expect PS3 owners who have been instantly watching movies and TV shows streamed from Netflix will be pleased with the continued enhancements that we’re offering.”

Netflix has been available since November 2009 to U.S. PS3 system owners who are Netflix members and since last month to Canadian PS3 system owners when Netflix launched the service in Canada. Today’s announcement reinforces the PS3 system’s position as the most complete home entertainment hub on the market, enabling consumers to play HD games, watch Blu-ray Disc movies, listen to music, view photos, browse the Internet, and download content from the PlayStation Network, which has evolved into an innovative and all-in-one entertainment destination for PS3 owners.

PlayStation®3 Takes The Lead In Supporting Netflix As The First Gaming System in the Marketplace To Add Title Search

July 28, 2010 – Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) LLC today announced that the PlayStation®3 (PS3™) system is the first computer entertainment system in the gaming market to get the latest version of the Netflix application for instantly watching movies and TV episodes as well as the only system to add a full title search capability. The search functionality is available now to all users who currently subscribe to Netflix and own PS3.

Netflix subscribers can access the service via the PS3 system through a free, instant streaming Blu-ray disc. Once within the application users simply enter a few letters and select the title they are looking for – they can begin watching their desired content in seconds.   Other consoles, in contrast, require Netflix subscribers to boot up their laptop or PC, go to the Netflix Web site, enter a search string, add the desired movie or TV show to their queue, and then go back to their console to choose and play that content. Netflix and SCEA will continue to expand on the entertainment experience delivered to PS3 system owners via the PlayStation®Network, including access via a native application in the coming months.

“The key to the PS3 system’s early access is support for our Continuous Improvement Architecture,” said Bill Holmes, vice president of business development for Netflix. “The Netflix application on the PS3 system gets updated by Netflix so easily that we can deliver frequent upgrades with the latest improvements to PS3 owners.”

Phil Rosenberg, SCEA senior vice president said, “We are thrilled to be the first in the marketplace to have Netflix search capability.   Search is fundamental to choosing movies and TV shows and we’re proud to be the only gaming system supporting the Netflix Continuous Improvement Architecture, which makes Netflix application improvements instantly available to the installed base of Netflix users on the PS3 system.”

Today’s news further solidifies the PS3 system as the most complete home entertainment hub on the market, enabling consumers to play high-definition games, watch Blu-ray movies, listen to music, view photos, browse the Internet, and download content from PlayStation Network − from exclusive games to blockbuster movies and popular TV shows.
