Review / Reseña: “Verbatim Bluetooth Mobile Keyboard” [iOS/Android]

Verbatim Bluetooth Mobile Keyboard

During my visit to Hispanicize 2012, I received a few gadgets I tested once I returned home. Among them, perhaps even my favorite one from the devices I and many others received from Radio Shack, there was a mobile keyboard.

As a PC user since my childhood, I seldom make mistakes when using a normal keyboard to type, but I still do more mistakes when using an iPad or an Android tablet when writing sentences quickly. Good thing I got this one for my mobile needs.

The Verbatim Bluetooth Mobile Keyboard is a wireless folding keyboard that works with many current devices, including Android 3.0 tablets and Apple devices (all iPads and Bluetooth-enabled iPhones with iOS 4.0 and up).

It doesn’t matter where you place it, it works great. There might a be a bit of a learning curve depending on your typing experience because it has less buttons that normal keyboards, but if one is already used to a keyboard on laptops, that can help. To make it work, it needs a couple of AAA batteries (already included in the package). If someone has rechargeable AAA batteries, it would not be an issue.

I somehow knew I wanted to try it with something else: my PlayStation 3. After turning it on and making the neccesary settings, this wireless keyboard became the one for my console. Whenever I’m not using the keyboard, I fold it and place it inside its carrying case. Of course, there isn’t much use for a keyboard in most games, but for next browsing and a few games, it’s very good.

As with the PS3, it worked well with the new iPad, Droid 4 (Verizon), and T-Mobile’s SpringBoard tablets. The keyboard icon makes the virtual keyboard appear, a really good thing, especially if you want to do a character in another language that you may not know how to do them, like the letters ñ or ç (esp. if someone’s a fan of Barcelona and wants to write Barça and/or if one knows French). A few letters are not of the same as most. The letters V and H are larger, while G & B are smaller. A few keys that usually appear on both sides of a normal keyboard (like Shift, Tab & Caps Lock) are only available on one side, perhaps an inconvenience for certain people.

Its compact design, media console, Fn buttons for miscelaneous app-specific functions on laptops, and the LED indicators make this mobile keyboard a very good device to use.

The good

  • It not only works with Android 3.0 devices and iPad/iPhones, it also works with the PS3 gaming console.
  • It’s easy to pair it with many devices.
  • Light-weight, foldable keyboard.
  • A keyboard carry-on case.

The bad

  • Two buttons with letters next to the middle of device are smaller while two others are bigger in order to make the keyboard a foldable one.
For more info about this keyboard, visit the following page: http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=12326360.

By the way, you can still take advantage of Radio Shack’s Trade and Save promotion. If you still have old and working laptops, cell phones, digital cameras and game consoles, you can get store credit on the purchase of a new. Many old tech products end up in the attic,  but Radio Shack guarantees at least $30 and as much as $300 for your old, tradeable devices. The last day to take advantage of this promotion is on the 28th. If your device isn’t listed, Radio Shack can recycle it for free, and if your device is worth $30, you have to buy a new phone and activate it. If the value is over $30, you get a store gift card. For more details, visit www.radioshacktradeandsave.com.

CES 2011: LG Optimus 2X, first mobile phone announced with a dual-core processor

English | En español: Impre.com – Piensa Digital [http://blogs.impre.com/piensa-digital/2011/01/05/el-primer-telefono-inteligente-con-procesador-de-doble-nucleo-lg-optimus-2x/].

LG and Nvidia today unveiled today at CES the first smart phone with a dual-core processor. With this new capability, first for mobiles, the LG Optimus 2X offers multimedia functions with more efficiency, without delay, or less than any other mobile phone device.

With the 1Ghz Tegra 2 graphics processor by Nvidia, the LG Optimus 2X consumes less power and offers high performance audio and video. According to the specifications, the device can record and play back high-definition video (1080p) and digital devices can be connected via DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance). Moreover, as in the recent late models of smart phones, it will come with an 8.0 megapixel rear camera and a 1.3 megapixel front camera.

One of the most attractive features is ‘HDMI mirroring’ (HDMI TV-out) that will bring the entertainment device to HDTVs. The use of the accelerometer and gyro sensor will make it more interesting to play on the big screen.

During Nvidia’s presentation, the capabilities of the mobile phone were exhibited in more detail. Different games were shown in order to demonstrate the graphics, ‘Angry Birds’ (developed by Rovio Mobile) and ‘Soul Craft’ (developed by MobileBits), and the comparison of the online game ‘Dungeon Defenders’  (Trendy Entertainment) on PC, PS3 and on the Tegra 2 at the same time. It seems like the Tegra 2 processor works fluently at the same speed as in the other two versions.

Other companies are supporting this technology by developing games and apps for this device, like Skype.

Due to the great performance of this new dual-core processor, Nvidia has given a new category to this phone: “super phone”, the next generation of smartphones.
